Guangming Science City Forum 2025 Opens

On December 4, the Guangming Science City Forum 2025 kicked off at the Shenzhen Science & Technology Museum. Organized by the Guangming District government in Shenzhen, this year’s event centered around the theme “Openness · Innovation · Leadership.” The forum gathered prominent scientists, industry leaders, and government officials to explore emerging technologies, unveil groundbreaking innovations, and strengthen China’s journey toward achieving greater independence in science and technology.

The event was structured in what organizers called a “1+1+7” format, featuring an opening ceremony, one main plenary session, and seven breakout discussions. This comprehensive program highlighted Guangming Science City’s recent developments across multiple sectors, including major scientific infrastructure projects, intelligent computing capabilities, life sciences research, and advanced scientific equipment manufacturing.

During the opening ceremony, five significant milestones were announced. These included the trial launch of the National Industrial Innovation Center for Bio-manufacturing, the opening of both the Shenzhen Center for High-end Scientific Instruments and the National University Regional Technology Transfer Center for the Greater Bay Area, the completion of Phase II construction at The Seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Shenzhen, the establishment of the Shenzhen Guangming Sci-tech Innovation Fund of Funds along with its initial group of sub-funds, and the formation of User Committees dedicated to synthetic biology and brain science infrastructure.

Distinguished experts delivered presentations on cutting-edge research topics. Charles M. Lieber, who holds a Chair Professorship at Tsinghua University, joined forces with Zheng Hairong, an Academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Dan Yang, who serves as Director and Senior Principal Investigator at the Institute of Neuromodulation and Cognition within the Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation. Their conversations explored brain-computer interface technology, biological intelligence systems, and the science behind sleep patterns.

Alongside the main forum, seven specialized sessions took place, organized around three core themes: cutting-edge science and technology, industrial advancement, and international collaboration. These focused sessions covered areas such as intelligent computing power, life science imaging techniques, scientific instrumentation development, bio-manufacturing processes, and brain-computer interface applications. The sessions encouraged deeper collaboration between industry, universities, and research institutions through unveiling new achievements, showcasing project presentations, and facilitating conversations across different scientific disciplines. The forum also incorporated physical activities like rowing, hiking, and cycling events, reflecting the dynamic and welcoming culture of Guangming Science City.

The event was organized by the Publicity Department of the CPC Guangming District Committee in Shenzhen.
